Symphony for Brass consists of three different movements that were individually conceived between 2016 and 2018. The first movement is through composed and introduces all of the motives that are used throughout the work. It opens with a Lydian fanfare which moves towards a more lamenting segment. As the movement searches for solace it comes to a moment of clarity, however the feeling does not stay as it slowly creeps back into the dark abyss. For the second movement, I wanted to create a stark contrast from the sustained and dense first movement. The second movement takes on a more playful and jocular character. The texture is far more diverse in spectrum from full counterpoint, to monophonic hocket lines. For the last movement, a solo horn recalls the first movement under murmurings in the trumpet. The work builds towards a final climax eventually rounding the work out with a recalling of the opening Lydian fanfare.
