Ruminations (2018)
SOLO GUITAR
(Approximate Duration | 4' 10’’)
I always get a chuckle when I inform others that my first instrument and love was guitar. As much as I’d love to say that the guitar and I had an endearing and lasting relationship which lead me to become a virtuosic guitar player, alas that wasn’t the case. I began studies at the young age of 6 and had little to no attention span. Not to mention, my own childhood ignorance blinded any course of success with my poor guitar instructor. 13 years with a trumpet and notational software lead me back to the guitar however this time to write for it.
The University of Akron guitar studio graciously participated in a collaboration with the composition studio. I was paired with a virtuosic guitar player and kindred spirit Henry Spencer. I was very appreciative of his knowledge and willingness to collaborate that after the project ended, I decided to write one more work for him. I wanted to write a work that explored as many different characters of the guitar in a short period of time. Throughout the work, one will hear nostalgic influences from Spain to more driving rock-like motives.
This title Ruminations didn’t dawn on me until after the premiere. It change in emotion and character reminded me of someone constantly thinking of their own distress. Pointing out the problems in which they see and reminiscing on what once was.
